Finding Inspiration with Photographer Allison Kuhl

There’s nothing better than teaming up with a creative professional who’s talented AND fun to work with. One Fated Knight struck gold with Allison Kuhl, the photographer behind our product shots. Days in the studio with her never feel like work. Kuhl also shoots for a number of our favourite Canadian independent fashion companies, such as F as in Frank and Alden Rae Jewelry. Recently, we took a time out on set to find out more about what inspires her. Photographer Allison Kuhl 1) How did you first get into photography? My favourite aunt lent me her Canon AE-1 camera for a summer when I was 12.  I couldn't put it down and by the end of summer I didn't want to give it back. Travelling in my late teens and early twenties helped me hone my skills and confirmed the idea for me that this could actually be my career. 2) What kind of photography is your focus? My photography focuses mainly on people, food, and travel. Here in Vancouver I get asked to photograph a whole range of different things so I try not to keep my focus too narrow. I also photograph weddings. Shooting weddings can be a lot of fun. They are definitely a test of your skill and creativity, and are extraordinarily rewarding. Perfect natural light, nature, and an unusual face are all some pretty great inspirational pieces as well. I'm also inspired by the challenge of telling a great story through a single image. 4) What is your dream photo shoot or subject? My dream has always been to shoot for a travel magazine. Travel photos allow to me to shoot all of my favourite things: food, people, nature and architecture. Croatia, Iceland, and Rio de Janeiro are all places they could send me on assignment and I would be on a plane tomorrow. 5) What photographers do you love? I've been loving Max Wanger's stuff for a while now. His aesthetic is clean, classic and fun. Ditte Isager is one of my all time faves. Her food photography is out of this world. As for the classics, Richard Avedon is a huge inspiration. 6) What is your favourite One Fated Knight bag? The Duke! It fits my Macbook Air and my Fuji X-e2 camera, plus I can wear the long strap cross-body to keep my hands free for my camera. Check out more of Allison’s work at www.allisonkuhl.com.
